Through the Back Door background

Through the Back Door

A young Belgian girl embarks on a treacherous journey to the United States, fueled by her longing to be reunited with her mother after their separation following her remarriage, amidst the turmoil of war.

In 1903, a widowed mother in Belgium is remarried to an American, leaving her young daughter Jeanne behind with a nurse. Years later, the mother returns to reclaim Jeanne, but the nurse tells her the child has died. When Belgium is invaded in 1914, the nurse sends Jeanne, now a teenager, to America with a letter revealing the deception. Jeanne finds her mother living on an estate, but is repeatedly denied the chance to explain who she is.
