Ivan Vassilievich Lomov, dressed formally, visits his neighbor Stefan Stefanovich Chubukov to propose to his daughter Natalia. Despite initial concerns, Chubukov is pleased with the proposal, but things quickly take a turn when Natalia and Lomov disagree and an argument ensues.
