Toby, a recent college graduate from Wisconsin, spends the summer in Manhattan with his cousin Packard, who has just lost his partner to AIDS. As Toby navigates the openly gay community, he struggles with his own identity and feelings. When he wears a pair of John R.'s shoes, he experiences vivid visions of the pre-AIDS era and a newfound confidence, allowing him to express his attraction to men.
