In 18th century Spain, a beggar arrives at a castle on a noble's wedding day, seeking food. Locked in the dungeon, he's forgotten until the noble's daughter, who's mute, secretly feeds him over the years. As she grows up, she's imprisoned and brutally assaulted by the noble and his servant. She escapes and flees to the woods, where she's found by Don Alfredo, who takes her in. She gives birth to a son, Leon, but dies soon after. Don Alfredo and his servant, Teresa, raise Leon, unaware of the curse he carries.
