The Cockettes background

The Cockettes

The Cockettes, a trailblazing San Francisco performance group, shook up the entertainment scene in the early 1970s with their innovative, gender-defying shows.

A flamboyant troupe of genderbending hippies took the stage of San Francisco's Palace Theater on New Year's Eve, 1969, and The Cockettes were born. Over the next 2 1/2 years, they created 20 outrageous drag performances, including "A Crab on Uranus Means You're Loved" and "Tinsel Tarts in a Hot Coma", and starred in four underground films.
