10-year-old Yohan, struggling to support his family in 1890s Norway, is sent away to work as a farm laborer after his jealous brother signs him up with an agent. Along the way, he meets other child wanderers, including 8-year-old Anna and her brother, and they journey together to their new homes. Yohan faces many challenges, including harsh treatment from his boss, Nome, and the loss of his friends to cruel farm owners.
