Douglas Brown, a famous actor, is shocked to discover he's being blackmailed by a mysterious figure. He enlists the help of his agent Jack Girardi, who calls in private detective Frank Manascalpo to resolve the situation. Initially, Frank proves effective, but he mistakenly targets an aspiring writer-director, Max O'Leary, who believes the sudden attention is due to Douglas's interest in producing his film. As the story unfolds, Max eventually achieves his Hollywood breakthrough, but at a deadly cost.
