In 1940s England, siblings Philip and Ruth set their sights on a second-hand camera to enhance their nature study notes. To raise the funds, they disguise themselves as Gypsy flower sellers. However, their plan is uncovered by their guardian, Aunt Margret, leading Ruth to run away. She's found the next morning by a village vicar, who listens to her story and sends her home with a newfound determination to reconcile with Aunt Margret. The siblings then turn their attention to helping their friend Terry, a Gypsy boy who's broken his back, but their efforts are ultimately unsuccessful. The loss of Terry sparks confusion and sorrow, with Ruth questioning God's silence despite her prayers.
