Sundown Saunders wins a horse race and receives a deed to a 640-acre ranch as his prize. He and his friend Smokey head to the ranch, only to find the Prestons planning to buy it from a deceitful government land agent named Taggart. Taggart hires Jack Mace to pick a fight with Sundown, but after Sundown wins, Taggart shoots Mace in the back. Sundown is falsely accused of the crime and a posse is formed to arrest him. Meanwhile, Taggart steals from the Prestons and plans a bank raid with a bandit leader named Burke. Sundown, the Sheriff, and a posse stop the bank robbery and Sundown learns that Taggart is behind the thefts and the attempted murder of Mace. Sundown sets out to rescue Bess, who has been kidnapped by Taggart.
