An American journalist vanishes in China during the 1950s, prompting his wife, Jane Hoyt, to search for him in Hong Kong. Rumors circulate that Louis Hoyt may be held captive by Communist Chinese as a spy. Despite warnings, Jane enlists the help of shady shipping magnate Hank Lee and later, local con artist Fernand Rocha. After Rocha's betrayal, Hank takes pity on Jane and decides to search for her husband himself, illegally entering Red China and encountering numerous challenges.
