The film is set in Luxembourg in 1942, during the Nazi occupation. The story follows 11-year-old Chr"«scht Knapp, who takes care of his grandfather's cows with his friend Jhuliett. The village is initially unaffected by the war, but everything changes when a villager is shot dead for participating in a general strike. The young Luxembourgers are forced to join the Wehrmacht, and some villagers are arrested or deported. The Gestapo searches homes for draft evaders, including the Knapp family's. Chr"«scht decides to take action, warning his neighbors' son of the Germans' arrival and demonstrating his readiness to take on responsibilities. The film concludes with Chr"«scht watching Allied planes heading towards Germany as he climbs into his tree for the last time.
