In 1244, a Sufi scholar named Jelaluddin Rumi met an itinerant dervish named Shams of Tabriz in Konya, Turkey. A powerful friendship developed between them. When Shams died, Rumi was overcome with grief and began reciting poetry about inner life and his love of God while spinning around a pole in his garden.
