Immigrant students are entering American public schools in record numbers, with over one million annually. A documentary, Welcome to South Portland, Maine, follows 14 teenage girls from diverse backgrounds, including Somalia, the Congo, Vietnam, Jamaica, and southern Maine, as they attend a hip hop, health, and culture program in a state considered the whitest in America. The film takes place during a period of increased anti-immigrant sentiment, fueled by the 2016 presidential race and terrorist attacks.
