After college, Heck Prigusivac returns to his hometown of New Pristina, Montana, before heading to Seattle to teach Latin. However, his family's dark past and personal struggles hinder his plans. His father was executed for murder, his brother Chick is on death row, and Heck's unique personality makes him a prime candidate to become an executioner. Despite his reservations, Heck takes a job as a prison "closer," where he must confront his sibling rivalry and a romantic attraction to Dori Dumchovic, Chick's high school girlfriend and the only woman on death row.
