Stacy Mitchell, a supermarket cashier, hides her pain behind a happy facade. After her husband leaves her, she tries to cope by joking about it. At a works drinks night, she's discovered to have a natural talent for comedy by pub comic Wilton Johnston. He asks her out, but she declines. Later, Wilton convinces Stacy to attend an open-mike club, and eventually, she gets up on stage. Struggling to get laughs, she realizes there's more to stand-up than just getting up. Stacy begins to craft a stand-up routine, exploring what she wants from life. Through trial and error, her material takes her in a new direction, ultimately helping her to change her life for the better.
