A biographical film about Gertrude Stein's life and lasting influence, from her studies at Radcliffe to her residence in Paris with her brother Leo. The two collect art by famous artists and host salons, where Stein begins writing, inspired by Cezanne's concept of equal importance for each part. Stein meets Alice B. Toklas, influences Hemingway, and later buys a home in Bilignin. After World War II, Stein embarks on a triumphant US tour, with friends and acquaintances sharing their stories and Stein's own words, along with those of Toklas.
