Dark Days background

Dark Days

A subterranean community of homeless individuals thrives in the forgotten tunnels beneath New York City, adapting to a harsh environment and forging a fragile existence in the shadows.

In a hidden world beneath Penn Station, a community of squatters has thrived for years, living alongside the Amtrak tracks. Filmmaker Marc Singer embeds himself with this makeshift family, capturing intimate stories of their lives. The group of men and one woman share tales of childhood trauma, incarceration, and personal struggles, all while living in a makeshift village of one-room shacks and scavenged materials. Despite the harsh conditions, they've created a sense of community, caring for each other and their pets, and finding ways to cook, socialize, and even give each other haircuts. But their way of life is threatened when Amtrak serves a 30-day eviction notice, leaving the residents of this underground world facing an uncertain future.
