The story takes place in 1940s Vietnam, where water is abundant, yet also brings decay. Fifteen-year-old Kim's family relies on their two buffalo for rice farming, but during the rainy season, the animals starve. Kim volunteers to take them inland to find food, embarking on a journey of self-discovery. Along the way, he witnesses the mistreatment of women, men fighting, and French taxation of the poor. He works for Lap, a buffalo herder with a connection to Kim's parents, and forms friendships that shape his future.
