Anne Harper, a Chicago literary agent, visits a remote cabin in Michigan's Upper Peninsula for a vacation. She finds an unexpected manuscript on her doorstep, written by Gerald Morgan, an author she has repeatedly rejected. The manuscript, "Bestseller", is about a literary agent who is stalked, tortured, and killed by a disgruntled author in northern Michigan. As Harper reads the manuscript, she realizes the story is becoming her own reality.
