The movie follows Kate Bosworth's journey as she falls in love with Bill Emerson, a Nantucket lighthouse inspector, who ends up marrying her twin sister Patricia instead. To cope with her heartbreak, Kate returns to her passion for painting. However, tragedy strikes when Patricia is washed overboard and drowns during a sailing trip. Kate's boat capsizes, and she regains consciousness on shore, only to discover that she is mistaken for Patricia and learns that Bill is returning from Chile.
