In this movie, a young boy's childhood is set against the backdrop of World War II in Australia's Hunter Valley. His father is away fighting, and his family takes in two Italian prisoners of war, who become like surrogate fathers to him. The household is soon joined by Jewish refugees from Berlin, including a daughter who sparks a romantic tension with one of the Italian prisoners. Meanwhile, the mother of the family begins to develop feelings for the other Italian prisoner. As the war nears its end, the family faces a series of challenges, including a carriage accident, a tick-borne illness, and the threat of tragedy from the martinet-like Madame Gutman. The boy's life is further complicated by the prospect of his father's return, which could bring significant changes to the family.
