A young teen named Chris Carlyle is forced to leave his farm and move to the city with his family, but he's heartbroken to leave behind his beloved mountain lion, Sunshine, who he raised from birth. Despite his parents' reluctance, Chris decides to send Sunshine to a local zoo, where he's allowed to visit his pet whenever he wants. However, Chris becomes disheartened by the poor living conditions of the animals at the zoo, which are struggling due to lack of funding. He begins to contemplate taking drastic measures to free Sunshine and the other animals from their cages.
