A devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti in 2010, killing hundreds of thousands, displacing over 1 million, and injuring tens of thousands, many of whom were children and young people who lost limbs. Amidst the chaos, two American organizations, Project Medishare and the Knights of Columbus, provided aid, setting up clinics and distributing prosthetic limbs to amputees. A group of earthquake victims, determined to defy stereotypes against people with disabilities, formed Team Zaryen, an amputee soccer team that inspired hope and new possibilities for those rebuilding their lives, including U.S. soldiers returning from war.
