In 1980s London, an American salesman with a murky past is approached by a taxi driver to buy counterfeit bills. The salesman reports the offer to the police, who set up a sting operation. However, the salesman becomes obsessed with uncovering the leader of the counterfeiters and the creator of the plates, known as "the magician." The IRA also becomes involved, as they seek to capture the same individuals. As the salesman's obsession grows, his marriage and life are put at risk.
