The Last Ocean background

The Last Ocean

The Ross Sea Antarctica, the world's last untouched ocean, is facing extinction due to humanity's destructive fishing practices.

The Ross Sea, Antarctica, is a pristine stretch of ocean teeming with life, including whales, seals, and penguins. For over 30 years, Californian ecologist David Ainley has studied this unique ecosystem, describing it as a "living laboratory". Despite being largely untouched by humans, an international fishing fleet has recently arrived, targeting Antarctic toothfish, known as "white gold" in upscale restaurants. Ainley and his fellow scientists, a nature photographer, and a filmmaker, join forces to stop fishing and protect this last pristine ecosystem.
