A Dutch doctor, haunted by his traumatic childhood experiences during World War II, embarks on a lifelong quest to uncover the truth and find emotional healing.

During World War II, a 12-year-old boy named Anton Steenwijk witnesses a Dutch resistance member being killed in his neighborhood. The man's body is taken in by Anton's family, but they are subsequently killed by the Germans, and their home is destroyed.
