Gerard Reve, a morbid Catholic writer, is invited to a literature club in Vlissingen. At the Amsterdam railway station, he's drawn to a handsome man who boards another train. Gerard meets Christine, a wealthy widow and beautician, and they have a one-night stand. The next morning, he sees Christine's boyfriend Herman's picture and recognizes him as the train passenger. Gerard manipulates Christine into bringing Herman to her house, with the intention of seducing him. As Christine travels to Köln to fetch Herman, Gerard stays behind, drinking and snooping through her safe. He discovers film reels with the names of Christine's deceased husbands, leading him to suspect she's a Black Widow. Gerard wonders if he or Herman will be her next victim.
