Isaac Davis, a struggling writer, quits his job and tries to make a living off his book, but faces financial uncertainty and personal struggles. He's paying alimony to his two ex-wives, including his lesbian ex-wife Jill, who's writing a tell-all book about their tumultuous split. Isaac starts dating a 17-year-old high school student named Tracy, but their age difference makes a long-term future unlikely. His life becomes even more complicated when he meets Mary Wilkie, the mistress of his best friend Yale, a college professor. Despite initial reservations, Isaac falls for Mary, who's aware that being the "other woman" isn't a sustainable situation.
