Unsuccessful writer Stephen Byrne tries to force himself on his servant Emily Gaunt, but accidentally strangles her. His crippled brother John Byrne arrives unexpectedly and Stephen convinces him to help dispose of the body to avoid a scandal. John, unaware of his brother's crime, agrees to help and they dump the body in the nearby river. Stephen uses Emily's disappearance to promote his book, framing her for the crime. When the body is found, all evidence points to John, who becomes the prime suspect.
