A young middle-class couple, Shôji and Masako Sugiyama, live a mundane life in Tokyo's suburbs. Their marriage has become emotionless, with Shôji commuting to the city and socializing with colleagues, while Masako stays home, attending to domestic duties and visiting with her mother. After the loss of their only child, their relationship worsens. Shôji begins an affair with a coworker, Goldfish, and Masako suspects infidelity. As their friends fall ill, the couple must confront the possibility of starting anew or saving their marriage.
