Abigail Wells receives a request from her distant cousin Nicholas Van Ryn, asking her daughter Miranda to be a companion to his daughter Katrine at Dragonwyck, the Van Ryn manor. The Wells are reluctant due Nicholas to' non-belief in God and his tenant farmers being bound to work on his land without the option to buy it. Upon arrival, Miranda catches the eye of Dr. Jeff Turner, a supporter of tenant-farmer rights who also has feelings for her.
