In 1766, Southern France is gripped by fear as a mysterious beast terrorizes the region of Gévaudan. Naturalist and taxidermist Chevalier Grégoire de Fronsac is commissioned to help find the creature. With his friend Mani, de Fronsac becomes embroiled in the local nobility's lifestyle, starting an affair with courtesan Sylvia and falling for nobleman de Morangias' sister Marianne. Despite their efforts, the hunt for the beast fails, and the king has a wolf stuffed to create a monstrous creature. Another victim is reported, and de Fronsac returns to Gévaudan on his own, suspecting something far more sinister than a simple beast.
