Shirley Yamaguchi, a talented individual of Japanese descent, was born in the year 1920 in Manchuria to Japanese parents. Initially, she went by the Chinese name Li Xianglan, which is also known as Ri Koran in Japanese. During the Japanese occupation of China, she actively contributed to the production of pro-Japanese films in the Japanese-occupied regions. In addition to her film endeavors, she also pursued a successful career as a singer, releasing several popular songs, including the iconic "Fragrance of the Night" (also known as Ye Lai Xiang),which continues to be widely enjoyed to this day.
However, as the Japanese forces eventually surrendered, Shirley Yamaguchi found herself in a precarious situation. She had been involved in promoting Japanese interests through her work, and this put her at risk of being accused of treason and potentially facing execution. To avoid such a dire fate, she chose to reveal her Japanese heritage, thereby sparing herself from the consequences of her past actions.
