Yngvild Støen Grotmol was born in Norway and grew up in Oslo with her parents, Dr. Randi Støen, and Dr. Tom Grotmol, along with her older sister. Her family later relocated to San Francisco, where her parents conducted medical research at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) for a couple of years.

As a young individual, Yngvild was drawn to the arts and pursued her passion for music. She played the violin and piano, and enjoyed singing and performing on stage in school plays. At the age of 15, she moved to the Dominican Republic as an exchange student, where she learned Spanish.

Yngvild's education in the arts continued at the music high school Foss Videregående skole in Oslo, with jazz singing as her main instrument. She later attended the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in New York City, as well as Rose Bruford in England and the Nordic Institute of scene and studio in Oslo. Additionally, she studied linguistics, psychology, and theatre history at the University of Oslo.

Throughout her career, Yngvild has worked across various genres, including drama and comedy, in theatre, musicals, cabarets, films, and TV-series. She has gained recognition in Scandinavia for her roles in series and movies such as Seks som oss, Upperdog, and Cybergullet, as well as her lead role in the sit-com Schmokk.

In 2020, Yngvild was nominated for the Amanda award for "best supporting actress" for her feature film role in Alle utlendinger har lukka gardiner. She has also played significant roles in Jarl Emsell Larsen's award-winning Norwegian TV-series Øyevitne (2014) and the Danish TV-series Herrens Veje (ride upon the storm),which made history by featuring the first lesbian love scene on Danish television.

In 2022, Yngvild starred in the highly controversial Norwegian Netflix-series The Lørenskog disappearance, which gained widespread attention and became one of the most-watched shows in Scandinavia and across the world. Recently, she can be seen as Gudrid in the hit Netflix-series Vikings Valhalla season 2, which premiered in January 2023.

Aside from her acting career, Yngvild is also a professional singer, musician, and frequently does voice-acting and voice-over work for animated movies and audio-books.
