Biography

Yaşar Kemal, born Kemal Sadık Gökçeli on October 6, 1923, was a renowned Turkish writer and human rights activist of Kurdish origin. Throughout his illustrious career, he emerged as one of Turkey's most prominent literary figures, earning a total of 38 prestigious awards and being a strong contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature, largely due to his remarkable work, Memed, My Hawk.

As a bold and unapologetic intellectual, Yaşar Kemal consistently demonstrated an unwavering willingness to address sensitive topics, particularly those related to the struggles faced by the Kurdish people. His courageous stance often led him to openly discuss these issues, even when faced with controversy.

In 1995, Yaşar Kemal was taken into custody and tried under anti-terror laws for an article he penned for the German magazine Der Spiegel, which accused the Turkish army of destroying Kurdish villages. Although he was eventually released, he received a suspended 20-month prison sentence in 2004 for an article he wrote criticizing racism against minority groups in Turkey, primarily targeting the Kurdish population.
