Willie O'Ree

Willie Eldon O'Ree, a Canadian former professional ice hockey player, was born on October 15, 1935, and is renowned for being the first black player to take the ice in the National Hockey League. Throughout his illustrious career, O'Ree played as a skilled winger for the Boston Bruins. His groundbreaking achievement earned him the esteemed title of "Jackie Robinson of ice hockey" for successfully breaking the black colour barrier in the sport. Notably, O'Ree had the privilege of meeting the legendary Jackie Robinson during his formative years. In recognition of his remarkable accomplishments, O'Ree was inducted into the prestigious Hockey Hall of Fame in November 2018.
