Biography

Willard Francis Motley, a renowned author, was born and raised in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago. This formative experience would later serve as the backdrop for his two most notable novels, "Knock On Any Door" and its sequel "Let No Man Write My Epitaph", which were both adapted into successful major motion pictures.

Motley's literary significance lies in his unflinching portrayal of social issues and the inner-urban struggles faced by Chicago's residents during the 1930s and 1940s. The author's work provides a poignant and thought-provoking glimpse into the lives of those living in this tumultuous period.

In 1965, Motley relocated to Mexico, where he sadly passed away. However, his legacy lived on, as he was posthumously recognized as one of the "Ten Most Noted Negro Writers in America" in 1967.
