Biography

Caryn Elaine Johnson, known professionally as Whoopi Goldberg, was born on November 13, 1955, in the Chelsea section of Manhattan, New York City. Her mother, Emma Harris, was a teacher and a nurse, and her father, Robert James Johnson, Jr., was a clergyman. Whoopi's ancestors hailed from Georgia, Florida, and Virginia.

Growing up, Whoopi worked in a funeral parlor and as a bricklayer while taking small parts on Broadway. She later moved to California, where she developed her skills as a stand-up comedienne and worked with improv groups, including Spontaneous Combustion.

Goldberg's big break came with an HBO special and a one-woman show as Moms Mabley, which showcased her unique and socially conscious talent with articulately liberal views. She was married three times and was once addicted to drugs.

Goldberg's film career took off with her Oscar-nominated role in The Color Purple (1985),followed by a string of films including Burglar (1987),The Telephone (1988),and Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986). However, it was her Oscar-winning role in Ghost (1990) that cemented her status as a household name.

In the early 1990s, Goldberg made regular appearances on Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) and starred in the box office smash Sister Act (1992). She went on to star in several successful comedies, including Made in America (1993) and Soapdish (1991).

As the late 1990s approached, Goldberg alternated between lead roles in straight comedies and supporting parts in more independent-minded movies. She also contributed her voice to several cartoons, including The Pagemaster (1994) and Captain Planet and the Planeteers (1990).

Throughout her career, Goldberg has been recognized for her unique talent and has hosted numerous tributes to other legendary entertainment figures. She has also been an advocate for social justice and has been involved in various charitable efforts.

In addition to her film and television work, Goldberg has also been a prolific author, penning the book "Book." She has been married three times and has been open about her struggles with addiction.

Goldberg's impact on the entertainment industry is undeniable, and she continues to be a beloved and respected figure in Hollywood.
