Biography

Leopold Damrosch, a multi-talented individual, arrived in the United States in 1871, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey.

He received his early education in the New York public school system, where he was later tutored in music by his father, Leopold Damrosch, as well as Rischbeiter, Urspruch, and Von Bulow.

Throughout his illustrious career, Damrosch was bestowed with numerous honorary degrees from esteemed institutions, including New York University, Princeton University, Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania, Brown University, New York State University, and Washington & Jefferson College.

As a pianist, Damrosch accompanied the renowned violinist August Wilhelmj on his US tour, and later, he became the permanent conductor of the Newark Harmonic Society.

In 1885, Damrosch succeeded his father as the Wagnerian director for the Metropolitan Opera, a position he held until 1891. During this period, he also conducted the New York Symphony and the Oratorio Society of New York.

In 1893-1894, Damrosch produced a series of Wagner operas at Carnegie Hall, showcasing his exceptional skills as a conductor and producer.

In 1895, he founded the Damrosch Grand Opera Company, which he led until 1900. He then became the staff conductor of the Metropolitan Opera and reorganized the New York Symphony in 1903.

Damrosch continued to direct the New York Symphony until 1927, when he became a music counselor for NBC and conducted a series of broadcasts.

In addition to his work with NBC, Damrosch served as the president of the National Institute of Arts and Letters from 1927 to 1929 and the American Academy of Arts and Letters from 1940 to 1948.

During World War II, Damrosch founded a school for bandmasters at Fontainebleau, France, demonstrating his commitment to music education and his dedication to serving his country.

Throughout his remarkable career, Leopold Damrosch left an indelible mark on the world of music, earning him a place among the most esteemed conductors, composers, and educators of his time.
