Tyler B. Robinson, a renowned Emmy-winning production designer, embarked on a remarkable journey after relocating to Portland, Oregon in 1998. Prior to his design career, Robinson served in the US Army, where he developed leadership skills, honed his communication abilities, and cultivated creative problem-solving strategies as a reconnaissance squad leader and weapons specialist.
His unconventional lifestyle, marked by cross-country hitchhiking trips across the US and Europe, seasonal employment, and a passion for snowboarding, nurtured his creativity, adaptability, and desire to defy normalcy. Upon settling in Portland, Robinson leveraged the GI Bill to attend Portland Community College and secured an internship at Food Chain Films, thus commencing his design-based film career.
Robinson's early work in Portland included commercials, independent films, and webisodes, before he was entrusted with the TV pilot for IFC's Portlandia, a role he continued to fill through season five. His collaboration with the Portlandia team resulted in several awards, including a Primetime Emmy and two Art Director's Guild awards. He has since worked on two FX shows with Portlandia director Jonathan Krisel, including Baskets and the pilot episode of Man Seeking Woman.
Robinson's feature film credits include Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates, The Kings of Summer, and the cult hit The FP. His work on The Kings of Summer was praised by film critic Christopher Redmond of Dear Cast & Crew, who noted that Robinson's production design "isn't just impressive - it's moving. Like an emotional time capsule, each set piece transported me back into adolescence. Not by recreating a specific era, but by evoking an overall feeling."
When not immersed in his design work, Robinson can be found enjoying Portland's scenic bike routes, playing pinball in local barcades, indulging in his cat's affection, or designing and fabricating fantastical weapons, including functional cupcake cannons and banana split Gatling guns.
