Travis Bain is a talented filmmaker based in Cairns, Queensland, whose passion for cinema was sparked at the tender age of four, when he first watched the iconic film Star Wars. This early fascination with the world of cinema was further fueled by the VHS boom of the early 1980s, which exposed him to a wide range of films, from the masterpieces of Kubrick and Lean to the more unconventional and often irreverent world of exploitation cinema.
In 1998, Travis took his passion for filmmaking to the next level by studying film and television production in Brisbane, where he went on to win awards for his short films and TV commercials. Inspired by the success of Robert Rodriguez's low-budget feature El Mariachi, Travis wrote, produced, and directed his own self-funded debut feature, Scratched, in 2002.
Scratched premiered in Brisbane in 2005, where it was selected as one of the four finalists in the inaugural Australia/New Zealand digiSPAA Digital Feature Initiative, and also screened at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival. Travis's second feature, Throwback, followed in 2015, and was selected for a dozen international film festivals, where it won multiple awards. Throwback's release on DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD worldwide marked Travis as a filmmaker to watch, with many reviewers praising his ability to create visually stunning and engaging films on a low budget.
In 2017, Travis premiered his third feature, the crime thriller Landfall, on the film festival circuit, where it received universally positive reviews. Landfall screened in Cairns, Melbourne, and the Gold Coast, and Travis's work was recognized with the Tony Bonner Award for Best Emerging New Talent at the 2017 Australian Screen Industry Network Awards.
In 2018, Travis won Best Director for Landfall at both the Australian Screen Industry Network Awards and the Oz International Film Festival, and Landfall also took home the award for Best Feature Film at the latter festival. With his impressive body of work and numerous awards to his name, Travis Bain has established himself as a master of low-budget filmmaking, and a filmmaker who consistently delivers high-quality films that exceed expectations.
