Tom, a multifaceted filmmaker, executive producer, and television executive, has made a profound impact on the world of documentary programming, earning seven prestigious Emmy awards.
Throughout his illustrious career, Tom has been responsible for producing some of the world's most highly acclaimed documentary programs, garnering an impressive 150+ awards for excellence, including the esteemed Dupont-Columbia Journalism Award, Peabody Awards, and over three dozen Emmys.
As the co-founder and president of Working Dog Productions, a New York-based video and film production company specializing in non-fiction television programming for the U.S. and global markets, Tom led the company from 1998 to 2014. Working Dog's esteemed clients included HBO, PBS, the Cooking Channel, National Geographic Channel, Animal Planet, and The History Channel.
Tom's extensive experience in the industry has also seen him serve as vice-president of programming and production, as well as executive producer, for the National Geographic Specials and National Geographic Explorer for a decade. Prior to joining National Geographic, Tom held the position of Senior Producer of Smithsonian World on PBS.
In addition to his work at National Geographic, Tom has also ventured into independent production and consulting, producing, directing, and writing programs such as Inca: Secrets of the Ancestors, part of Time-Life's Emmy-winning Lost Civilizations series on NBC.
Early in his career, Tom honed his skills as a freelance producer-director of documentaries for NBC and WNET, and later joined the team of cinema verite pioneers Albert and David Maysles as a staff producer.
