Tim Hetherington was born in Liverpool, UK, and later pursued his education in literature at Oxford University. He then returned to college to study photojournalism, laying the foundation for his illustrious career.
Throughout his work, Tim has demonstrated a passion for creating diverse forms of visual communication, experimenting with various mediums such as multi-screen installations, fly-poster exhibitions, and handheld device downloads. His long-term documentary projects have taken him to West Africa, where he lived and worked for eight years, reporting on social and political issues worldwide.
Tim's notable projects include Healing Sport, published as part of the group project Tales of a Globalizing World, and Long Story Bit By Bit: Liberia Retold, a five-year project that narrates recent Liberian history through images and interviews. His book Infidel, published by Chris Boot Ltd in 2010, explores the lives of young men and conflict in Afghanistan.
As a filmmaker, Tim has worked as both a cameraman and director/producer. He has collaborated on films such as Liberia: an Uncivil War and The Devil Came on Horseback, and his directorial debut film Restrepo won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. His latest film, Diary, is a highly personal experimental short currently playing at film festivals.
Throughout his career, Tim has received numerous awards and accolades, including a Fellowship from the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts, a Hasselblad Foundation grant, four World Press Photo prizes, including the World Press Photo of the Year 2007, the Rory Peck Award for Features, and an Alfred I. duPont award.
