Thomas Sainsbury is one of New Zealand's most renowned and accomplished playwrights, garnering widespread recognition and acclaim for his thought-provoking dark comedies in various countries including New Zealand, the United States, Australia, and London.
Born in Matamata, Thomas relocated to Auckland to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree at the university, where he majored in English Literature and Theatre. Since then, he has been an integral part of the university's theatrical productions, as well as the underground theatre scene, taking on roles as a writer, director, and performer.
Following his graduation, Thomas co-founded the theatre company Fingerprints and Teeth Productions. Under this banner, he has written and directed an impressive 40-plus plays, including Sunday Roast, LUV, The Mall, Loser, The Christmas Monologues, The Somnambulist, and Crims. Notably, Thomas has been selected three times for Playmarket's New Zealand Young Playwrights Competition. Additionally, his plays The Mall, Loser, and The Christmas Monologues have been published by The Play Press (NZ).
Thomas's foray into television has also been successful, with his observational comedy series SUPER CITY earning three nominations for the Aotearoa TV & Film Awards, including Best Series and Best Writing.
