Born with a passion for performing, Theora's love for singing is as sweet as a honeycomb. In fact, when her son was an infant, she would strum a guitar to lull him to sleep. Her innate talent was evident from a young age, as she was born into a family of theater enthusiasts. Her parents, Warren Balsam and Cleone Balsam, met in New York City as young actors and writers. Her father, a writer for the New York Times, later became a school teacher, while her mother, who began her career as a model and actress, went on to become a director, writer, and set designer, known for her work on TV's The Waltons and films such as 8 Heads in a Duffel Bag.
Theora is also the niece of renowned actor Martin Balsam, actress Joyce Van Patten, and cousins Talia Balsam, Adam Balsam, and Iris Smyles. Her early years were spent studying in New York City, where she appeared in community theater productions. Initially, she aspired to become a professional dancer, traveling daily to study ballet, jazz, and modern dance at the prestigious New Dance Group Studio in the Broadway area. She soon began landing acting roles as well, and her dedication to her craft earned her a scholarship at the studio.
Theora's roots remain firmly planted in New York City, where she continues to pursue her passion for the entertainment industry in Hollywood. When not working, she dedicates her time to volunteering for animal rescue organizations, BookPALS, sponsored by the SAG Foundation, and the Art of Elysium, which enriches the lives of young artists.
