Biography

Here is the biography of Teresa Wright:

Teresa Wright was a talented actress born Muriel Teresa Wright on October 27, 1918, in the Harlem district of New York City. She was discovered by Samuel Goldwyn and went on to become a Hollywood star.

Wright began her acting career in school plays and later attended the Wharf Theatre in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where she performed in plays such as "The Vinegar Tree" and "Susan and God". She moved to New York and changed her name to Teresa after discovering there was already a Muriel Wright in Actors Equity.

Wright's first New York play was Thornton Wilder's "Our Town", where she played a small part and understudied the lead ingénue role of Emily. She eventually replaced Martha Scott in the lead after the actress was escorted to Hollywood to make pictures and recreate the Emily role on film.

Wright's breakthrough role came with the film "The Little Foxes" (1941),where she played Alexandra alongside Bette Davis and Patricia Collinge. She won an Oscar nomination for her work and went on to star in films such as "Mrs. Miniver" (1942),"The Pride of the Yankees" (1942),"Shadow of a Doubt" (1943),and "The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946).

Wright's MGM contract ended after "The Best Years of Our Lives", and she began freelancing, appearing in films such as "Enchantment" (1948),"Something to Live For" (1952),and "Track of the Cat" (1954). She also appeared in stage productions, including "Salt of the Earth" (1952),"Bell, Book and Candle" (1953),and "The Heiress" (1954).

Wright married screenwriter Niven Busch in 1942 and had two children with him. She divorced Busch in 1952 and married playwright Robert Anderson in 1959. The couple had a daughter together and lived on a farm in upstate New York until their divorce in 1978.

After her divorce from Anderson, Wright continued to work in stage productions, including "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the Moon Marigolds", "Long Day's Journey Into Night", and "Morning's at Seven". She also appeared in the film "The Rainmaker" (1997) opposite Matt Damon, which was her last film role.

Teresa Wright passed away on March 6, 2005, at the age of 86, due to a heart attack.
