Tawny Newsome is a talented actress, writer, and musician, renowned for her captivating performances in various TV shows and films. Her notable roles include Angela Ali in Netflix's Space Force, Ensign Beckett Mariner in Star Trek: Lower Decks, Gabby in IFC's Brockmire, and Chelsea Leight-Leigh in Pluto's Bajillion Dollar Properties.
She has also appeared in several comedies, such as NBC's Superstore, IFC's Sherman's Showcase, and NBC's Perfect Harmony. Moreover, Tawny hosts the Official Star Trek Podcast, Star Trek: The Pod Directive, alongside Paul F. Tompkins.
Before moving to Los Angeles, Tawny primarily focused on writing and performing her work on the Second City Mainstage in Chicago, or touring with her bands, including Four Lost Souls and Jon Langford. As a longtime collaborator of Langford's, they have created quirky, outsider country music with a rotating cast of performers.
In recent years, they had the opportunity to record an album in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, with some of the original Muscle Shoals Sound session players. Tawny's most recent project is a completely DIY rock record, made with her longtime friend and fellow singer, Chicago indie darling Bethany Thomas.
Their debut album, 'Material Flats', is an 8-track, garage, punk, pop record with alt-country influences. The album was written and recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, with Tawny and Bethany co-writing the tracks in June 2020 while sheltering in place together in Tawny's home and studio in the Mojave desert. Tawny even engineered the record herself.
'Material Flats' is a unique blend of windy, weird, desert-punk sounds with a sweet side and an undercurrent of anxiety. The album is set to be released everywhere on October 9th, 2020.
