Biography

Sylvia Bataille was a renowned French actress, whose talent earned her the prestigious Leprix Suzanne-Bianchetti award in 1939, a prize previously won by notable actresses such as Audrey Tatou, Isabelle Adjani, Geneviève Bujold, Isabelle Huppert, and Simone Signoret. She appeared in notable films like Renoir's Crime of Monsieur Lange and A Day in the Country.

Sylvia's personal life was marked by her marriages to two influential men. Her first husband was Georges Bataille, a troubled and philosophical novelist, with whom she had a daughter named Laurence, who would later become a psychiatrist and actress, appearing in Renoir's French Cancan. Sylvia left Georges for Jacques Lacan, a prominent and controversial French psychoanalyst, with whom she had a daughter, philosopher Judith Miller, born in 1941. The couple eventually married in 1953, and Judith would later marry philosopher and psychoanalyst Jacques-Alain Miller.

Sylvia was also a member of the agit-prop theatre company, Le groupe Octobre, founded by the renowned screenwriter Jacques Prevert, known for his work on films like Children of Paradise and Port of Shadows.

In addition to her artistic pursuits, Sylvia was also a patron of the arts, owning Gustave Corbet's controversial painting, The Origin of the World, for 38 years. After her death, the French government acquired the painting to settle inheritance taxes. Her sister, Rose Makles, was married to the surrealist painter André Masson, who created a companion piece to Corbet's painting, which was attached to the original canvas. Masson's work would later influence American abstract expressionists. Sylvia's other sister, Simone Makles, was married to French government minister Jean Piel, who collaborated with Sylvia's ex-husband, Georges Bataille.
