Stanley V. Henson, Jr. was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and spent his first year of life in the Annapolis, Maryland home of Abraham and Elizabeth Carr-Smith, where his parents rented a room. This home, located at Carr's Beach, was a hub for black entertainers in the 1950s and 1960s, with legendary performers such as Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, and Lionel Hampton frequenting the venue.
