Bandreddi Sukumar, popularly known as Sukumar, is a renowned screenwriter, film director, and producer of Telugu films. Born to Tirupathi Rao Naidu, a rice trader, and Veera Veni, a homemaker, Sukumar studied at a Zilla Parishad High School in Razole, Andhra Pradesh. He later pursued his master's degree in Mathematics.
Before entering the film industry, Sukumar worked as a mathematics lecturer at a junior college in Bhimavaram. However, he soon felt his life as a lecturer had become too mundane, prompting him to switch careers.
Sukumar began his career in the film industry by writing for TV serials and films. He later worked as an assistant director in a few movies, including Manasichi Choodu (1999). His directorial debut was Arya (2004),a romantic entertainer starring Allu Arjun, Siva Balaji, and Anuradha Mehta. The film was a massive blockbuster and ran over 420 days across eight centres, earning Sukumar the Filmfare South Award (2004) for Best Director - Telugu.
Sukumar's subsequent directorial ventures included Jagadam (2007),an action movie; Arya 2 (2009),a romantic comedy; 100% Love (2011),a romantic comedy; 1: Nenokkadine (2014),a psychological action thriller; I Am That Change (2014),a short film; Nannaku Prematho (2016),an action thriller; Rangasthalam (2018),a period drama; and Pushpa: The Rise - Part 1 (2021),an action drama.
Sukumar married Thabitha Sukumar in 2009, and they have two children, a son, and a daughter.
